Vaishali was the capital of the Vajjika League, often cited as one of the earliest examples of a republic, from around the 6th century BCE. Today it is an archaeological site spread over a group of villages, and a pilgrimage place for both Buddhists and Jains.

The Buddha preached his last sermon here before his mahaparinirvana, and the Second Buddhist Council was held in the city in 383 BCE. Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, was born at Kundagrama, identified as a suburb of Vaishali.

At Kolhua, excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India revealed a monastery, a tank, votive stupas, a main stupa and one of the best-preserved Ashokan pillars, topped by a single lion. Vaishali also has the Relic Stupa, said to have held a share of the Buddha’s ashes.

Getting there
