Overview
Vaishali was the seat of the Licchavis, one of the earliest republics known in India. The Ashokan pillar at Kolhua, with a lion capital, stands beside the remains of a stupa and monastery.
The Buddha visited Vaishali several times, and Jain tradition holds that Lord Mahavira was born near here. Hajipur, the district headquarters, is known for its bananas.
