Golghar, Patna
A giant beehive-shaped granary completed in 1786, with a 145-step spiral stairway to the top.

Just west of Gandhi Maidan in Patna stands the Golghar, or Round House, a huge beehive-shaped granary built by the East India Company. It was designed by John Garstin of the Bengal Engineers and completed on 20 July 1786, intended to store grain against famine.
The building has no pillars, and its walls are about 3.6 metres thick at the base. A spiral stairway of 145 steps winds up the outside to the top. It was designed for the workers who carried grain in and out.
The climb rewards visitors with a wide view over the city and the Ganga.
