Tomb of Sher Shah Suri, Sasaram
A three-storeyed octagonal sandstone mausoleum standing in the middle of an artificial lake, completed in 1545.

In the middle of an artificial lake in Sasaram stands the tomb of Sher Shah Suri, founder of the Sur Empire. He commissioned it for himself, and it was completed on 16 August 1545, about three months after his death.
The tomb sits on a square plinth reached by a causeway. It is a three-storeyed octagonal building of sandstone crowned by a large dome, with chhatris at the corners of the upper storeys and a veranda of arched openings running around it. It was originally painted in bright colours and decorated with glazed tiles.
Arched windows with latticed screens light the interior. The western side, which faces the qibla, is closed and holds the mihrab.
